TIKRIT, Iraq – Col. Randal A. Dragon, commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, hosted an Iftar meal for the leadership of the Salah Ad Din Province Monday night at the governor’s house in Tikrit.

Dragon showed the 1st Infantry Division’s respect for Iraqi religious customs and traditions by hosting the dinner which followed the sun-set prayers during Ramadan. One hundred government, tribal and religious leaders shared the Iftar meal – which consisted of roasted meats, rice, vegetables, lentils, dates and juice ? with 2nd BCT Soldiers.

Following the meal and social time with many of the provincial leaders, Dragon announced he had arranged for the purchase of 800 kerosene heaters to give to the Imams of the province. This was done to fulfill another pillar of Islam, giving to the poor during the month of Ramadan.

Each of the 2nd BCT’s task forces will be working with their local Imams to identify needy families in their area. Soldiers will give gifts of food to help them celebrate the end of the Ramadan Feast of Eid ul Fitur.

“We are showing our respect for the Iraqi people, their religion, their culture and their traditions during their most holiest of months,” said Chaplain (Maj.) Randy Brandt, chaplain for the 2nd BCT.

“Our ultimate goal here is security and stability,” Brandt said. “One great way to help us get there is to win the cooperation of the Iraqi people by winning their hearts and their trust.”

Adding: “If they can see us through the eyes of compassion and understanding, we can gain a lot of ground and move closer to our goals.”
